Although the use of CGM systems reduces the frequency of blood sugar measurements with a traditional blood glucose meter, this method cannot be completely replaced. A daily blood sugar measurement can be helpful, for example, to assess potential discrepancies between tissue readings and blood values. Additionally, traditional measurements are required if hypoglycemia is suspected, glucose levels remain persistently high, or in special situations. Furthermore, some CGM devices require at least two blood sugar measurements per day using a fingerstick and test strips to calibrate the system.
For several years, CGM systems with alarm functions have been included as aids in the service catalog of statutory health insurance. However, this does not mean that statutory health insurance (GKV) automatically covers the costs in every case. The GKV is not obliged to cover the costs automatically. If the treating doctor issues a prescription for the device, the patient, together with the doctor, must also submit a request for cost coverage. The health insurance company will then review the request and decide on cost coverage.
